This week I report on the publication of non-statutory explainer guidance for schools on Martyn’s Law and the announcement of a new Ukrainian GCSE.
Publication of non-statutory explainer guidance for schools on Martyn’s Law
This newly published guidance sets out the key principles for education and childcare settings in England under the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, also known as Martyn’s Law. It covers:
- who Martyn’s Law applies to
- who is legally responsible
- what education settings must do
- enhanced tier and event requirements
- how the law applies to different educational settings
The guidance should be used alongside the Home Office statutory guidance to help settings comply with the legislation. The examples contained in the document have been written to illustrate specific concepts in the Act and to aid understanding.
Ukrainian GCSE from 2028
Pupils will be able to study Ukrainian at GCSE from 2028, with the first assessments taking place the following year, ministers have announced. The qualification, which is being developed by AQA, will be open to all pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is intended to help pupils to preserve their language and cultural heritage while opening doors to future opportunities.
